Alur Kingdom secures new half-bursary opportunities in health sciences
“We are now interested in extending our services to the people of Alur Kingdom, especially youths and women, so as to promote development of the district and provide health services to the people,” the letter reads in part.

Zombo: The Alur Kingdom has secured a new offer of half-bursary opportunities in health and science-related programmes from the Abim Institute of Health Sciences, further expanding access to professional training for youths and women across the Kingdom.
The offer was communicated through a formal letter addressed to the Prime Minister of the Alur Kingdom, Mr. Jonathan Opio, by the institute’s Director, who expressed the institution’s commitment to supporting skills development and improving healthcare service delivery in local communities.
According to the Director, the initiative is aimed at empowering young people and women through affordable health education while contributing to district development.
“We are now interested in extending our services to the people of Alur Kingdom, especially youths and women, so as to promote development of the district and provide health services to the people,” the letter reads in part.
The Abim Institute of Health Sciences, located at the Faculty of Education, Universal Primary Teachers College in Abim District, says the bursary programme is part of its wider strategy to enhance access to health training opportunities for learners from the Eastern, Northern and West Nile regions of Uganda.
The institute has previously partnered with cultural institutions in the Lango, Karamoja and Acholi sub-regions to train qualified health professionals.
Under the new arrangement, beneficiaries from the Alur Kingdom will be eligible to pursue a range of programmes, including National Certificate in Nursing, National Certificate in Midwifery, Certificate in Pharmacy and International Computer Certificate courses.
The nursing and midwifery programmes each run for two and a half years, while the pharmacy certificate takes two years and the computer certificate one year.
The institute also indicated that graduates who demonstrate practical competence in nursing, midwifery, pharmacy and computer studies will be considered for employment opportunities.
Alur Kingdom leaders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant boost to professional skills development in the health sector.
Prime Minister (Jadipu) Prince Lawrence Opar Angala said the bursary scheme would help address the shortage of health workers in the Kingdom’s predominantly rural communities.
“We welcome this initiative. This will provide opportunity for promoting professional training of youths in the health sector in order to strengthen government’s efforts in service delivery to the kingdom’s largely rural communities with very low health workers’ ratio to the population,” Opar said.
He pledged that the Kingdom would actively mobilize eligible students to apply and expressed optimism about establishing a long-term partnership focused on youth and girls’ empowerment through education and skills training.
Prince Opar urged prospective applicants from all chiefdoms within the Kingdom to take advantage of the subsidized training opportunity by submitting their applications through the Kingdom’s Minister of Education and Environment or the Prime Minister’s office at Yamo Trading Centre in Atyak Sub-County, Zombo District.
The Alur Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to working with genuine, government-recognized institutions that can support quality education and training for its people.
His Majesty Ubimu Phillip Rauni Ularker III continues to champion education and skills development, consistently encouraging his subjects to pursue formal learning and vocational training opportunities.
The latest bursary offer follows the Kingdom’s acquisition of 50 half-bursary slots from Nebbi School of Health Sciences for the July 2026 intake earlier this year.
In 2025, the Kingdom also received 436 bursary opportunities for vocational courses at Erussi Institute of Science and Technology and Fountain Head Institute of Management and Technology.
Additionally, Isabarongo Mwatansozi Mwogezi Butamanya, who also serves as Chairman of the Uganda Kings and Cultural Leaders Forum, successfully lobbied for 1,000 full-tuition scholarships through a partnership with JAIN University in India, from which the Alur Kingdom benefited with 50 slots.
