Police hunt Hoima teacher accused of hiring villager to teach on her behalf

Hoima:Police in Hoima District are hunting for a teacher at Kabaale Public Primary School in Kabaale Sub-county after she allegedly absconded from duty and hired a villager to teach in her place.
The anomaly was discovered on Monday by Hoima District LCV Chairperson Uthuman Mugisha Kadiri during a monitoring visit to the school.
The teacher, identified as Atugonza Joselyne, is accused of abandoning her duties and hiring Madrine Wembabazi Rahuma, a villager, to teach on her behalf.
Information obtained by our reporter indicates that Wembabazi had allegedly been signing the school attendance register in Atugonza’s name and had been occupying the school’s staff quarters.
During the monitoring exercise, Wembabazi reportedly fled from the classroom and disappeared into a nearby bush after she was discovered.
Kadiri has asked police to hunt for and arrest both the teacher and the school head teacher to facilitate investigations into the matter.
The school’s deputy head teacher, who was found at the school during the inspection, has reportedly recorded a statement with police. His details were not available by press time.
Kadiri condemned the practice, saying absenteeism by public servants undermines service delivery.
“Absconding from duty by public servants negatively affects service delivery. Such practices cannot be allowed to continue because they deny children the education they deserve,” Kadiri said.
He said authorities would continue monitoring public institutions to ensure government workers perform their duties as expected.
