Teachers challenged to promote norms and values among learners
She added that the education system should focus on producing self-reliant individuals through participatory teaching methods where teachers act as facilitators.
Masindi: Teachers across Uganda have been urged to promote norms and values among learners as a way of improving academic performance and nurturing responsible citizens.
The call was made by Dr Mugisa Annette, Commissioner for Teacher Education, Training and Development at the Ministry of Education and Sports, while speaking after a training of tutors and teachers in Masindi.
Over 100 tutors and teachers from traditional training colleges, including Arua, Lodonga, Busubizi and Kabale, were equipped with learner-centered teaching skills aimed at improving classroom practices.
The training, dubbed training for transformation, was organized by Red Earth Uganda in partnership with Red Earth UK, with the goal of improving children’s learning outcomes.
Dr. Mugisa emphasized that teachers spend more time with learners than parents, and therefore have a key role in shaping their values and discipline.
She added that the education system should focus on producing self-reliant individuals through participatory teaching methods where teachers act as facilitators.
Dr. Mugisa further warned that academic qualifications without discipline and values are meaningless, urging teachers to guide learners into becoming responsible citizens.
Robert Muhangi, Executive Director of Red Earth Uganda, said the program aims at improving teaching practices and supporting the implementation of the competence-based curriculum.
Christopher Barungi, the Project Manager, noted that 78 tutors have so far completed the two-year training, gaining practical teaching skills and supporting model nursery schools attached to training colleges.
John Birungi, a tutor from Kabale Teachers College, said the training will help bridge gaps in Early Childhood Development education.
Annette Kumunda, Dean at Uganda Institute for National Teachers – Kabale Campus, said the training has enhanced quality education by emphasizing practical learning using real-life materials.
