SAD! One-year-old baby dies while mother attends disco
Onencan said Awacango had on several occasions reportedly left the child in the care of her grandmother.
Zombo: A one-year and three-month-old baby girl has died after allegedly being left alone at home by her mother, who reportedly went out to attend a disco night in Zombo District.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Alisi Thungu Cell, Dwonga Ward in Paidha Town Council.
The child’s mother, identified as 32-year-old Consulate Awacango, was reportedly living with her grandmother at the time of the incident.
The baby was discovered dead by her grandmother, who lives in a separate house within the same compound.
Mawa Charles Onencan, the LC1 Chairperson of Thungu Cell, said the circumstances surrounding the child’s death were unfortunate.
“The child died alone after the mother went for a disco night. She came back in the morning and found everyone here. It is an unfortunate incident,” Onencan said.
Onencan said Awacango had on several occasions reportedly left the child in the care of her grandmother.
Family members expressed anger and disappointment over the incident, with Awacango’s uncle, Derick Awekonimumgu, blaming what he described as her long-standing irresponsible behaviour.
Awekonimumgu alleged that Awacango had struggled with excessive alcohol consumption and substance misuse, which he said had affected her ability to care for the child.
“The family is deeply disappointed by what happened. We want the matter to be handled by the relevant authorities,” he said.
By the time of filing this report, family members had reportedly confined Awacango at the home as they considered handing her over to police.
The family was also making arrangements for the burial of the child after a man identified by the mother as the child’s father reportedly denied paternity and declined responsibility.
Local leaders have since called for greater parental responsibility and urged parents and guardians to ensure that young children are properly cared for and not left unattended.
