Police investigate three mysterious fires at Masindi Centre for the Handicapped

He said police were still investigating to establish what could have triggered the fires.

Masindi: Police in Masindi District are investigating three successive fire outbreaks at Masindi Centre for the Handicapped in Bikonzi Sub-county that destroyed staff quarters, household property, staff documents and the school kitchen.

The fires occurred on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, raising concerns about the safety of learners and staff at the institution, which provides education to children with disabilities.

Solomon Mugisa, the Albertine North Regional Community Liaison Officer and Acting Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incidents on Monday, October 19, 2026, at the regional police offices in Central Division, Masindi Municipality.

Mugisa said police responded to the first incident and found that fire had gutted one of the staff quarters, destroying household property.

He said another fire broke out on Saturday, damaging a second staff quarter and destroying staff documents. On Sunday, police received another report from the head teacher after fire caught the school kitchen.

Mugisa said investigators had not yet established the cause of the repeated incidents, adding that preliminary checks had not provided an explanation for the outbreaks.

According to Mugisa, the electrical installations appeared to be in good condition, while no charcoal stove was found in the affected house.

He said police were still investigating to establish what could have triggered the fires.

Mugisa said police would convene a meeting with relevant stakeholders and school management to find a lasting solution and prevent further destruction.

He emphasized that protecting learners with disabilities and safeguarding school property remained a priority.

Meanwhile, Mugisa urged school administrators across the region to strengthen fire prevention measures and ensure that firefighting equipment is readily available and functional.

He commended the management of Masindi Centre for the Handicapped for maintaining properly refilled fire extinguishers, saying the equipment helped in fighting the fires before police joined the response.

Mugisa encouraged other schools to adopt similar safety practices and assured residents that police would work with stakeholders to establish the cause of the incidents and prevent further outbreaks.

Investigations into the three fires are ongoing, and no cause has been established so far.
