Buliisa: In a concerted effort to reduce the alarming rate of road accidents, Boda Boda riders and drivers in Buliisa District have been sensitized on road safety during a recent engagement organized by TotalEnergies through their subcontractor, Safe Way Right Way.
Held at the Buliisa District Local Government offices, the sensitization exercise aimed to educate riders and drivers on the importance of observing traffic regulations and embracing safe riding and driving practices.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to promote a culture of road safety and minimize preventable accidents across the region.
Patrick Fievet, the Logistics Manager in charge of Road Safety at TotalEnergies, emphasized the need for increased vigilance among riders.
He noted that many road accidents are attributed to rider negligence and urged participants to remain alert and cautious at all times.
Philipe Hallabel, who oversees safety and environment at the site, warned against overloading and alcohol consumption, both of which significantly endanger passengers’ lives. He advised drivers and riders to thoroughly assess the condition of their vehicles and motorcycles before starting any journey.
Engineer Ireen Namuyiga, CEO of Safe Way Right Way, encouraged riders to wear helmets, stressing that such practices can greatly reduce the severity of crashes and save lives.
Adding a local perspective, Michael Tayebwa, the District Police Commander (DPC) of Buliisa, revealed that the Bunyoro region recorded 438 road accident deaths last year. He urged riders to stay vigilant and observe all safety measures to prevent further loss of life.
To support safe road use, attendees were provided with essential safety items including first aid kits, helmets, and reflective jackets.
