OPM launches distribution of heifers in Bunyoro
“This is just the beginning. More initiatives are coming, and we must ensure they succeed,” he stated.

Kiryandongo: The Ministry of Bunyoro Affairs under the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has launched the distribution of 150 hybrid heifers to selected beneficiaries in the Bunyoro Sub-region, aimed at enhancing socio-economic empowerment and lifting communities out of poverty.
The official launch, held Thursday at Kiryandongo District headquarters, was presided over by the Minister of State for Bunyoro Affairs, Hon. Jenifer Namuyangu Kacha.
She emphasized the government’s commitment to poverty alleviation through practical interventions, urging beneficiaries to properly care for the animals by providing food, water, shelter, and veterinary support.
“These heifers are not just donations, they are an investment in the region’s future. We expect the beneficiaries to become the next generation of livestock breeders in Bunyoro,” Minister Namuyangu said.
Kiryandongo District LCV Chairperson Edith Aliguma welcomed the initiative, pledging that local leaders would monitor the impact of the program to ensure it benefits households as intended.
Kibanda South MP Jacob Karubanga called on residents to embrace and support government programs, warning that failure to implement them effectively would not be tolerated.
“This is just the beginning. More initiatives are coming, and we must ensure they succeed,” he stated.
District Production Officer Hassan Byenkya Issa noted that the heifer distribution complements other government programs such as coffee farming, fish farming, and the Parish Development Model (PDM), all designed to improve rural incomes.
Deputy RDC Jonathan Akweteireho cautioned beneficiaries against selling the heifers, saying that monitoring teams would visit homes to ensure compliance.
Levi Kizito of Bweyale Town Council described the heifer as valuable capital to help him escape poverty. Easter Nakese from Kigumba Town Council said the milk and manure would support both income generation and agricultural productivity, helping her pay school fees.
Jacklyn Ajok praised the NRM government for transforming lives, saying the initiative would help her shift from poverty into a money economy. Moses Kyalegera added that income from milk and manure would help him build a better home.
