Kiryandongo: The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), through its Kiryandongo District branch, has launched a massive National Identification Card (ID) renewal exercise, which has seen an overwhelming turnout from residents across the district.

The official launch took place on Tuesday, May 17, 2025 at the Resident District Commissioner’s (RDC) office in Kiryandongo and was presided over by RDC Mr. Dan Muganga.

The six-month-long exercise is part of NIRA’s nationwide effort to ensure that citizens have updated and valid identification cards.

RDC Muganga announced that the entire process including renewal and replacement of National IDs is free of charge, removing a major barrier that often prevents citizens from updating their IDs.

“We want everyone to take advantage of this free service. National IDs are key for accessing services like healthcare, education, banking, and voting,” he said.

He mentioned that the requirements for one to register or renew for the national ID will include; existing cards for renewal and police letter to replace the lost ID card.

Others are birth certificates and letter from the office of the district internal security officer (DISO) for fresh registration noting that the new ID cards wll be valid for ten years.

The new IDs issued under this exercise will be valid for 10 years.

The initial rollout will cover Kiryandongo Town, Bweyale Town Council, and Kigumba Town Council as a pilot phase. Later, the exercise will be extended to parish levels to ensure wider access, especially for residents in remote areas.

Akankura Merbale, the NIRA Registrar for Kiryandongo District, urged the public not to miss this opportunity.

“This exercise is crucial. Let us avoid last-minute rushes. IDs are vital for service delivery and national planning,” he emphasized.

He assured the public that NIRA teams are fully equipped and committed to reaching even the most rural communities in the district.
