Kabarole moves to split Burahya County into three constituencies

The motion was unanimously seconded by a majority of councilors during the sitting.

Kabarole: Kabarole District Council has passed a motion recommending the division of Burahya County into three constituencies, a move leaders say will improve representation and service delivery in the district.

The motion was presented before council on Thursday at the district headquarters in Kitumba by John Amanyire Kasweta, the male councilor representing Hakibale Sub-county.

While presenting the motion, Kasweta said the proposal is in line with the 1995 Constitution of Uganda (as amended) and the Local Government Act Cap 138. He explained that the recommendation seeks to introduce new constituency demarcations within Kabarole District to enhance local governance, improve service delivery, and ensure equitable resource allocation without altering the district’s existing boundaries.

Kasweta told councilors that Burahya County currently covers a wide geographical area with a rapidly growing population, which has made effective representation increasingly difficult.

He added that similar constituency divisions have already been implemented in neighbouring districts including Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, Kamwenge, and Bundibugyo, noting that such changes have improved representation and brought government services closer to the people.

Kasweta therefore requested the council to approve and forward a recommendation to Parliament, the Ministry of Local Government, and the Electoral Commission to demarcate Burahya County into three constituencies: Burahya South, Burahya Central, and Burahya North.

According to the proposal; Burahya South would comprise Kasenda Town Council, Kasenda Sub-county, Ruteete Sub-county, Kiiko Town Council, and Busoro Town Council while Burahya Central would include Mugusu Town Council, Mugusu Sub-county, Karangura Sub-county, Kicwamba Sub-county, and Harugongo Sub-county.

Meanwhile, Burahya North would consist of Rwengaju, Hakibale, and Kabende Sub-counties, together with Kijura and Kibasi Town Councils.

The motion was unanimously seconded by a majority of councilors during the sitting.

Gideon Ruta, the male councilor for Kasenda Sub-county, supported the proposal, saying the division of the county would improve representation and ensure government programmes reach communities more effectively.

Grace Ahumuza, the Female Youth Councilor, also backed the motion, noting that the creation of additional constituencies would open up more leadership opportunities and strengthen service delivery in the district.

If approved by the relevant national authorities, the proposal could see Burahya County represented by three Members of Parliament instead of the current single constituency representative.
