Bunyoro leaders task appointed ministers on public university

He also stressed that there would be zero tolerance for corruption in the Parish Development Model and other poverty alleviation programs during the new government term.

Bunyoro: Senior government leaders in Greater Hoima have urged newly appointed and reappointed cabinet ministers from the Bunyoro Sub-Region in the 2026–2031 government to champion the establishment of an operational Bunyoro Public University.

On Tuesday evening, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni appointed five individuals from Bunyoro to cabinet and state ministerial positions. Balaam Barugahara was named Minister for Local Government replacing Rafael Magyezi, while Grace Mary Mugasa was appointed State Minister for Bunyoro Affairs replacing Jennifer Namuyangu Kacha.

Jonard Asiimwe was appointed Minister in the Office of the President in charge of Science, Technology and Innovation replacing Monica Musenero. Robinah Nabbanja retained her position as Prime Minister, while Fred Byamukama was appointed Minister for Works and Transport replacing Edward Katumba Wamala.

Meanwhile, Matia Kasaija was dropped as Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development and replaced by Henry Musasizi, who was elevated from State Minister for Finance.

Speaking to this publication, Hoima City Woman MP Nyakato Asinansi appreciated President Museveni for rewarding the Bunyoro region with top cabinet positions.

Nyakato urged the newly appointed and reappointed ministers to work together with other leaders from the region to advocate for the establishment of a functional Bunyoro Public University.

She appealed to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to work closely with the Minister of Education and ensure that a motion legalizing the operation of Bunyoro Public University is tabled before Parliament.

Nyakato noted that the establishment of a functional public university in the Bunyoro region is no longer a request but a serious demand from the people.

Hoima District LCV Chairperson Mugisa Uthman Mubarak also urged the newly appointed ministers to open offices and remain approachable to the people so that residents can directly benefit from their appointments.

Meanwhile, residents and religious leaders in Masindi District have commended President Museveni for appointing five ministers from the Bunyoro sub-region in the new cabinet.

Sheik Yahaya Soozi Abdunuru, the Chairperson Masindi Town Mosque applauded the President for allocating the five ministerial slots to Bunyoro and urged the newly appointed ministers to serve diligently so that the region can secure more government positions.

Rev. Siira Irumba applauded Minister Balaam for supporting religious projects including the construction of churches and mosques, as well as supporting pilgrims.

John Byaruhanga, a resident of Northern Cell in Central Division, said the appointment of the leaders will strengthen lobbying efforts for Bunyoro because of their leadership experience.

Sheik Yahaya further challenged the ministers to work hard and lobby for effective development projects for the region.

Jachan Robinson, a resident of Kigezi, said the new ministers would create opportunities for educated youth in the area.

Karuhanga John, the NRM Chairperson for Bwijanga Sub County, thanked the President for consistently placing Bunyoro at the center of government priorities.

Karuhanga added that Balaam Barugahara’s appointment as Minister for Local Government is a major step for the region, noting that the ministry directly supports local communities and expressing hope that Masindi will experience significant change in the next five years.

Speaking after his appointment, Balaam Barugahara thanked President Museveni, Gen. Salim Saleh and Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for mentoring him.

He pledged to mobilize and serve citizens across the country, emphasizing that poverty eradication and improved service delivery would be key priorities.

“The transition of our parishes begins immediately. I will not sleep until every parish shines and poverty is removed from our communities. We must work together to transform the lives of our people and build a stronger Uganda,” Balaam said.

He also stressed that there would be zero tolerance for corruption in the Parish Development Model and other poverty alleviation programs during the new government term.
