Prison inmate suddenly dies in Kiryandongo

Kiryandongo: A 42-year-old inmate at Kigumba Government Prison in Kiryandongo District has died after reportedly developing severe chest pain.
The deceased has been identified as Pican Moses, an Alur by tribe, who was serving a three-year prison sentence at Kigumba Government Prison.
Solomon Mugisa, the Albertine North Regional Community Liaison Officer and Acting Regional Police Spokesperson, said the incident occurred on Thursday, at around 7am when Moses reportedly developed chest pain while at the prison.
According to Mugisa, prison medical officers attended to the inmate, but his condition later worsened, prompting his transfer to Kigumba Health Centre III for further medical attention.
“He was rushed to Kigumba Health Centre III, where he was admitted and later pronounced dead at around 10am,” Mugisa said.
The Officer in Charge of Kigumba Government Prison, SASP Jimmy Ongola, subsequently reported the matter to Kiryandongo Police Station.
Mugisa said police officers responded to the scene, examined it and recorded statements from relevant witnesses, including prison and medical officers.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased had no fresh physical injuries on his body,” he said.
The body was later conveyed to Kiryandongo Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Police have registered a case of sudden death under reference KDGO DEF 039/2026.
Mugisa said efforts are underway to trace the deceased’s relatives as investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death continue.
Police records indicate that Moses was serving a three-year sentence after being convicted of illegally entering a protected wildlife area without permission from the relevant wildlife authorities.
Mugisa has urged residents, particularly those living near protected areas such as Murchison Falls National Park, to avoid illegal entry, poaching and other unlawful activities.
“Wildlife is an important source of government revenue through tourism, and it is the responsibility of everyone to protect and conserve it,” Mugisa said.
He added that several people have previously lost their lives in encounters with wild animals and other dangerous incidents linked to illegal activities in protected areas.
