A case of extortion was registered at Kiryandongo Central Police Station under reference number CRB 695/2026.

Kiryandongo:  Police in Kiryandongo District have arrested an anaesthetist attached to Kiryandongo General Hospital over allegations of extorting Shs150,000 from a patient’s relative during an emergency operation.

The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Moses Baluku, was arrested on Tuesday at around 8pm and is being detained at Kiryandongo Central Police Station as investigations continue.

Solomon Mugisa, the Albertine North Regional Community Liaison Officer and Acting Regional Police Spokesperson, said on Wednesday that the alleged incident involved a 22-year-old patient, Winnie Zamukunda, who required emergency surgery after sustaining a tear in her uterus.

According to police findings, the patient’s paternal aunt, Georgina Kabaseke, allegedly handed over Shs150,000 to Baluku while the patient was being prepared for the operation.

“The matter was reported to the Resident District Commissioner, prompting police officers to intervene and arrest the suspect,” Mugisa said.

He added that police had recovered the money and recorded statements from some of the individuals involved in the incident.

A case of extortion was registered at Kiryandongo Central Police Station under reference number CRB 695/2026.

Mugisa said the circumstances under which the money was allegedly demanded or received were still under investigation.

The police spokesperson added that Baluku would be taken to court to answer the charges once investigations are complete.

He urged members of the public who may have experienced similar incidents to report to Kiryandongo Central Police Station and record statements to support the investigations.

The arrest comes amid concerns over alleged extortion in public health facilities, where patients and their relatives may face financial demands while seeking medical attention.

Police have not yet disclosed whether the suspect has made a statement regarding the allegations. The allegations against him remain unproven, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
