Uganda hands over confiscated fishing gear to DR Congo

The returned fishing equipment included; 21 engines, 17 large boats, 21 fuel tanks and associated fuel lines.

Buliisa: In a show of regional cooperation and diplomacy, the Government of Uganda, through the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has returned over 21 confiscated fishing gears to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The handover ceremony took place recently at the UPDF Marine Brigade base in Booma Cell, Butiaba Town Council, Buliisa District.

The event was officiated by Hon. Allan Atugonza, Member of Parliament for Buliisa Constituency and District NRM Chairperson.

Hon. Atugonza commended President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his commitment to regional peace and cooperation, urging the DRC government to reciprocate by returning Ugandan fishing gear previously confiscated by Congolese authorities.

“President Museveni’s vision of regional harmony is clear, and this handover is proof of that commitment. We appeal to our Congolese counterparts to return Uganda’s fishing gear as well,” Atugonza said during his remarks.

Receiving the equipment on behalf of the DRC government, Mr. Kabaseka Kyakabakibi expressed gratitude to the Ugandan government for its goodwill and constructive engagement.

Local leaders also voiced support for continued dialogue and mutual respect. Fred Lukumu, Buliisa District Chairperson, emphasized the need for regular bilateral meetings to enhance cooperation and sustainable management of shared lake resources.

Asaba K. Musa Awera, Mayor of Butiaba Town Council, appealed to Congolese authorities to treat Ugandan fishers humanely during enforcement operations on the lake, citing past incidents of mistreatment.

The returned fishing equipment included; 21 engines, 17 large boats, 21 fuel tanks and associated fuel lines.

Lt. George Ntungire, Commander of the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) in Buliisa District, noted that the confiscated gear had been impounded during operations launched last year as part of regional efforts to curb illegal fishing practices.

The gesture marks a significant step toward improving cross-border cooperation in managing Lake Albert’s shared resources, and stakeholders from both countries expressed hope for lasting peace and mutual benefit.
