UG Decides 2026

Renowned journalist Wamatoyi ventures into politics, eyes Manafwa LC5 seat

His campaign promises to center on youth empowerment, better service delivery, and a stronger voice for Manafwa at the national level.

Manafwa: Kenneth Wamatoyi, a respected journalist currently with Bridge FM in Jinja, has officially declared his bid for the Manafwa District Chairperson (LC5) seat, signaling his entry into active politics under the banner of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

Wamatoyi, widely known for his sharp political analysis and field reporting, is part of a growing trend of journalists transitioning into politics.

His decision is already reshaping the political conversation in Manafwa, where he will challenge the incumbent LC5 Chairperson, Kosea Kigayi Kimono, in the upcoming district elections.

“My decision to join politics is driven by the glaring gaps in development and weak lobbying for government programs in Manafwa. I want to be the voice that brings change,” Wamatoyi said during his announcement.

The young journalist, who hails from Butta Sub-county in Manafwa, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication and Journalism from the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), graduating in the class of 2024.

His journalism career began during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2021, where he served as a field reporter. He later volunteered with University Radio 93.1 FM at IUIU before moving to 101.4 Elgon FM, and ultimately joining 89.8 Bridge FM in Jinja, where he has built a strong following.

Wamatoyi’s candidacy joins a growing list of media professionals who have successfully made the leap into politics, including Ibrahim Ndhoga (Bugweri LC5), Joseph Sooka (Namutumba District Councillor), Faridah Namulondo, Joel Balondemu (both Jinja City Councillors), and Rogers Mbajjwe and Hassan Muwanga from Njeru Municipality.

Educated in the region he now seeks to serve, Wamatoyi completed his A-Level at Mbale High School, O-Level at Magale Secondary School, and primary education at St. Edward’s Primary School in Manafwa.

His campaign promises to center on youth empowerment, better service delivery, and a stronger voice for Manafwa at the national level.

As the 2026 general elections approach, Wamatoyi’s entrance into the race adds momentum to the rising participation of young professionals in Uganda’s political landscape.
