Masindi woman hacks neighbours over garbage dispute
“Basemera got a panga and began attacking us, severely injuring my two-year-old child,” Aciro recounted.

Masindi: Residents of Nyangahya Cell in Central Division, Masindi Municipality were left in shock Monday morning after a violent domestic dispute over garbage disposal turned brutal.
A woman, identified as Moreen Basemera, reportedly attacked her neighbours with a panga, leaving three people including a 2-year-old child seriously injured.
The victims have been identified as Moses Nsubuga, Aisha Kyomuhendo, and a toddler who sustained deep head injuries. All three are currently receiving treatment at Master Doctor’s Clinic in Masindi Town.
According to Phionah Aciro, the mother of the injured child, the altercation started when Basemera allegedly dumped garbage into their compound. In retaliation, Aciro’s husband threw the garbage back into Basemera’s compound, sparking a violent confrontation.
“Basemera got a panga and began attacking us, severely injuring my two-year-old child,” Aciro recounted.
Moses Nsubuga said he was attacked by Basemera’s son, only identified as Umar, when he tried to question the family about the incident. Umar reportedly emerged with a panga and a hoe handle, cutting Nsubuga during the struggle.
Aisha Kyomuhendo, a pregnant woman, also suffered injuries while trying to intervene in the scuffle.
The in-charge of Master Doctor’s Clinic, Joseph Mugerwa, confirmed that the toddler is receiving first aid while awaiting further examination via scan. He noted that the child’s condition has since stabilized.
Cleophus Isingoma, the area Vice LC1 Chairperson, stated that police were immediately alerted and recovered the hoe handle and other evidence at the scene. He also revealed that Basemera had previously threatened a neighbour with a machete in a land-related dispute.
“We urge residents to remain calm and allow the police to handle the situation. Violence and taking the law into one’s hands are not the solution,” Isingoma said.
By press time, Moreen Basemera and her son Umar were reportedly on the run. The case has been formally reported at Nyangahya Police Post, and investigations are underway.
Neighbour Catherine Ayebale expressed concern over Basemera’s continued presence in the community. “She has become a danger to us. We live in fear. She should be removed from the area,” Ayebale pleaded.
