Public urged to participate in national medal nominations
He also emphasized the need for thorough record-keeping.

Kabarole: The Office of the President has called on citizens across the country to actively engage in nominating individuals for national medals and awards, in a renewed effort to promote merit-based recognition and honor outstanding contributions to Uganda’s development.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement at the Kabarole District headquarters on Thursday, Tonny Mulambe, the Principal Assistant Secretary in the Chancery Department at the Office of the President, emphasized the importance of public involvement in the nomination process.
“We want Ugandans to take part in identifying individuals whose service to the nation deserves recognition,” Mulambe said. “Nomination forms are available at the offices of the Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), and we encourage all citizens to participate.”
Kabarole RDC Saleh Kamba, who chaired the meeting, echoed the sentiment, stressing that inclusiveness in the nomination process would address concerns about undeserving recipients.
“We must stop the culture where medals are given to people with no traceable impact,” said Kamba. “Community participation ensures that awards go to those who have truly earned them. We also encourage the awards committee to orient recipients on how to carry themselves as role models.”
Restatuta Balinda Mboijana, the District Secretary for Works, welcomed the initiative as a step toward greater transparency and fairness.
“This is a commendable move. However, community sensitization is key so that citizens are well-informed on how to meaningfully participate,” she noted.
Adding to the discussion, Arthur Hakiza Nzeimana, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Kabarole, proposed the establishment of a local “Wall of Fame” to publicly honor recognized achievers. He also emphasized the need for thorough record-keeping.
“Maintaining track records of nominees will not only uphold the integrity of the process but also inspire the younger generation to serve with patriotism and integrity,” Hakiza said.
The Office of the President is rolling out the initiative across various districts as part of ongoing efforts to make the national awards program more participatory, credible, and community-driven.
