Masindi Hospital staff warned against sit-down strike

Masindi: Health workers at Masindi General Hospital have been warned against staging a sit-down strike following the arrest of two doctors and a suspected impersonator at the facility last week.
The warning was issued by the Acting Executive Consultant at Masindi General Hospital, Dr Rogers Musinguzi, during an exclusive interview with this publication.
Musinguzi alleged that some individuals he described as “mafias” had teamed up with a section of hospital staff to resist his efforts to fight extortion and were mobilising health workers to stage a sit-down strike.
He warned staff against taking industrial action without a genuine cause and in accordance with labour laws.
“Health workers can only go on strike if they have a genuine cause that is in line with the labour laws,” Musinguzi said.
Musinguzi also disclosed that 29 staff members at Masindi General Hospital had been referred to the Masindi District Local Government Rewards and Sanctions Committee, including one of the doctors at the facility.
He said the committee had also resolved that all staff at the hospital should wear uniforms bearing their names, regardless of whether the uniforms are provided by government.
“The committee resolved that all staff at Masindi General Hospital must put on uniforms with their names engraved, regardless of whether the uniform is provided by government or not,” he said.
The development comes amid an ongoing dispute over alleged extortion and misconduct at the health facility, with some staff members facing disciplinary action.
Meanwhile, Masindi District Secretary for Social Services, William Mwambu, said he had directed the officer in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department to investigate circumstances surrounding the arrest of the Acting Executive Consultant at Masindi General Hospital.
Mwambu said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the arrest and determine whether proper procedures were followed.
