Kiryandongo celebrates women’s day with renewed call for gender equality

“We must appreciate the contributions of women and ensure they have equal access to resources and opportunities,” Adyeeri stated.

Kiryandongo: The Kiryandongo District Local Government marked International Women’s Day on Tuesday with vibrant celebrations held at Mutunda Sub-county headquarters, bringing together women from all corners of the district to honor their achievements and amplify their voices.

The event was graced by Madam Daphine Kabatelesa, Director of Development at Omugo Foundation in the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, who served as the Guest of Honor.

In her keynote address, she encouraged women to actively engage in development programs and income-generating initiatives, emphasizing that peace in families begins with empowered women.

“Women are pillars of peace in society. When a woman is empowered, the whole family benefits,” said Madam Kabatelesa.

Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Dan Muganga lauded the NRM government for fostering peace and stability, which he said has been essential in creating an enabling environment for women’s development.

Meanwhile, Kiryandongo District LC5 Chairperson, Aliguma Edith Adyeeri, reiterated the importance of gender equality and called upon men to respect and value the roles of women in both the home and society.

She also pointed to government empowerment programs like the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP) and the Parish Development Model (PDM) as crucial tools in improving the socio-economic status of women.

“We must appreciate the contributions of women and ensure they have equal access to resources and opportunities,” Adyeeri stated.

The celebration also served as a platform for women to voice challenges, including limited access to healthcare, poor roads, and barriers in education.

Madam Nacha Reheema, a local businesswoman, thanked President Yoweri Museveni for prioritizing women’s empowerment but called for more investment in essential services.

Mutunda LC3 Chairperson, Hon. Manyuru Patrick, reminded women of their vital role in parenting and shaping future generations. Hon. Sentalo, a male district councilor, commended the decision to host the Women’s Day celebration in Mutunda, calling it an honor for the sub-county.

The event was attended by a wide array of stakeholders including women’s groups, RDCs, and district leaders, all united by a common goal: to advance gender equality and empower women in Kiryandongo.
