Kiryandongo: Four individuals have been arrested in Kiryandongo District over the alleged theft of one million shillings intended for beneficiaries of the Parish Development Model (PDM), a government initiative aimed at eradicating poverty.
The suspects currently in custody include Juliet Katusabe, the town agent for Northern Ward in Kiryandongo Town Council; Edward Katusiime, the PDM enterprise leader from Mukonogum Cell; Mary Atim, Secretary under the Kiryandongo District Production Department; and a SACCO leader identified only as Anguliga.
According to police sources, the group reportedly used the National Identification details of Oliva Katusiime, a resident of Runyanya village, to fraudulently register and withdraw PDM funds without her knowledge or consent.
The incident came to light when Katusiime reported to the Resident District Commissioner’s office, claiming her phone, SIM card, and ID photocopies had been misused.
The matter prompted swift action from Assistant RDC Sam Mbabazi and Deputy RDC Jonathan Akweteireho, who launched an investigation that led to the arrests.
Mbabazi urged the public to report any irregularities related to the PDM program to his office, emphasizing the initiative’s purpose of uplifting citizens from poverty. “We will leave no stone unturned in dealing with theft of PDM funds,” he said.
Deputy RDC Akweteireho warned that those sabotaging government programs would be prosecuted. “If found guilty, the law will take its course,” he asserted.
Lydia Tusabe, Kiryandongo Town Council Clerk, condemned the alleged actions, particularly because they involved government staff. She stressed that justice must be served.
Kiryandongo Resident District Commissioner Dan Muganga echoed these sentiments, ordering the arrest of anyone implicated in misappropriating public funds meant for the vulnerable.
Musa Matende from Kiryandongo North Ward welcomed the arrests, expressing hope that it would deter further mismanagement of PDM funds.
