The injured children are currently receiving treatment at Joint Clinic Rugashali.
Kagadi: Four children are nursing serious injuries after they were allegedly attacked with a sharp object by a suspect identified as Byaruhanga John in a shocking incident that occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The attack happened at around 3:00 a.m. in Iruhuura Village, Kagadi District, while the children were sleeping at their grandparents’ home.
The victims, all reportedly orphans, sustained deep cuts on the head, arms, jaws, and shoulders. They have been identified as Katusabe Anamary, 9, Ainembabazi Emily, 5, Natukunda Catherine, 14, and Twinamasiko Lozious, 12.
The injured children are currently receiving treatment at Joint Clinic Rugashali.
According to locals, the suspect had reportedly been brought from Buhumuriro Sub-county for prayers at the home of Nyirabazimenyera Purikelia, a well-known prayer woman in Iruhuura Village, Izahura Parish.
It is alleged that after the prayers, the suspect developed signs of mental instability before sneaking into the room where the children were sleeping and attacking them.
Some residents and relatives criticized the activities of the prayer woman, alleging that several people who seek prayers from her often face serious challenges afterward.
The victims said they were attacked while asleep during the night.
Area leaders have since called for thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Turyatunga Herbert and Gabriel Habiyaremye urged security agencies to establish whether the suspect had a history of mental illness and questioned the activities conducted at the prayer home.
Meanwhile, senior medical officer Dr. Tuhairwe Abrahamaani, also known as Dr. Kalismart, said the children are in stable condition and are receiving treatment for deep wounds.
Police in Rugashali Sub-county later launched an operation and arrested several people in connection with the attempted murder case, including the main suspect, Byaruhanga Jamil, Nyirabazimenyera Purikelia, and the suspect’s mother, whose identity had not yet been disclosed.
Confirming the incident by phone, Albertine South Region Police Spokesperson Julius Hakiza said investigations into the attempted murder case had commenced.
