Child burnt to death in Buliisa house fire

It's alleged that the aunt locked the door and went to spend a night with her partner.

Buliisa: Residents of Katodio Cell in Wanseko Town Council Buliisa district have been left in shock after a 5-year-old girl child was burned to ashes in the house fire.

The incident happened in the wee hours of Friday at around 1 a.m.

Lubeni Kisembo, a resident, told this publication that the deceased was staying with the maternal aunt, and it’s alleged that the aunt locked the door and went to spend a night with her partner.

According to Kisembo, the deceased’s mother stays in West Nile, and the child was staying with the maternal aunt by the time the incident happened.

Mr. Stephen Wandera, the area chairperson, said that the yet-to-be-identified aunt left the child in the house, and an unknown person set a fire to the house, thus killing the child on the spot.

Dismas Kaahwa, the LC3 Chairperson for Wanseko Town Council, said he was informed by the neighbor about the incident at around 1 a.m.

‘’The neighbor came to my place informing me about the incident, and efforts to save the innocent child’s life were futile since the door was padlocked and fire had already engulfed the house,’’ he said, adding that ”The aunt came back at night after when were trying to rescue the child from fire.”

The politician advised parents and guardians to desist from locking children in the house mostly during night hours.

Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Mercy Afoywroth, and the aunt as Kanyemungu Sharon, 21.

Hakiza says the manhunt for Sharon’s partner is ongoing.  Currently, Sharon is detained at Buliisa CPS while Afoywroth’s body was conveyed to Buliisa Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem.
