Kikuube: Police in Kikuube District have launched a manhunt for a driver who fled the scene after a fatal road crash that claimed the life of Kikuube LCV Chairperson, Peter Banura Araali.
The incident occurred on Saturday, April 4, 2026 at around 8:30 PM in Butyamba Cell, Kikuube Town Council, along the Hoima–Fort Portal road.
According to the Albertine South Regional Police spokesperson, SP Julius Allan Hakiza, Banura was knocked by a speeding taxi (drone), registration number UBQ 853E, which was traveling from Kagadi towards Hoima City.
Hakiza explained that after the crash, Banura was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition but sadly died on the way.
At the time of the accident, Banura had been driving his official vehicle, a Toyota Hilux (registration number UG 3400084).
Preliminary reports indicate that Banura had stopped near Bukinda IDP Camp in Butyamba Cell to drop off casual labourers he had been traveling with from his farm. Ibrahim Kugonza, who was with the deceased, said they noticed a speeding taxi approaching from the Kagadi side.
Fearing for their safety, Banura reportedly got out of his vehicle, but in the process, he was struck by the oncoming taxi.
Two casual labourers sustained serious injuries and are currently admitted at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.
The driver of the taxi fled the scene immediately after the accident. Police say efforts are underway to apprehend the suspect.
Hakiza cautioned motorists against reckless driving and urged them to observe road safety regulations to prevent such tragedies.
He also dismissed social media reports alleging that five other people died in the same accident, confirming that only one fatality was recorded.
A postmortem examination was conducted at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.
Buhaguzi County Member of Parliament, Francis Kazini, described the late Banura as a dedicated leader, noting that during the time they worked together, he had no conflicts with him.
Banura had just completed his first term in office and had recently been re-elected in the concluded general elections.
