Bukono Chief opens Lukiiko, rallies subjects to embrace unity and development

Namutumba: The Hereditary Chief of Bukono Chiefdom in Namutumba District, His Royal Highness Nkono Godfrey Mutyaba, has officially opened the Bukono Lukiiko, calling on his subjects to unite and actively participate in development programs aimed at improving livelihoods and reducing poverty.
Speaking during the opening ceremony held at the Ivukula Town Council Headquarters grounds in Bukono Constituency, HRH Nkono urged members of the Bukono Lukiiko, ministers, and residents to work together in implementing initiatives that will transform the chiefdom.
“I call upon all leaders at the district level in their respective councils, and at the lower local councils, to ensure that they support our programs,” HRH Nkono said.
The chief highlighted his flagship cocoa-growing initiative, under which households across Bukono have received cocoa seedlings, alongside government poverty alleviation programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM).
According to Nkono, the combined interventions are intended to eradicate household poverty and improve incomes.
“All these interventions are designed to eradicate poverty in our homes,” he said.
Organic Fertilizer Secured
HRH Nkono also announced that, together with the Minister for General Duties, Owek. Michael Mwandha, through Mwamic General Enterprises, they had secured organic fertilizers for farmers in the chiefdom.
“This fertilizer can be applied to any crop to ensure better yields,” Nkono told his subjects.
He further outlined other priority programs being promoted by the chiefdom, including environmental conservation through tree planting, increased food crop production to strengthen food security, and the provision of educational bursaries aimed at producing more educated youth while reducing teenage pregnancies.
The chief also expressed appreciation to State Minister for Housing and Bukono Constituency MP Princess Persis Namuganza for supporting the chiefdom’s initiatives.
“I thank my daughter and sister, Hon. Princess Persis Namuganza, for her unwavering support toward the chiefdom. She supports all our programs,” he said.
Namuganza Calls for Unity
Representing Minister Namuganza, her Personal Assistant Florence Namukose commended HRH Nkono for spearheading development initiatives and urged residents to remain united.
“Namuganza is the only Minister from this district and one of the few Ministers selected from Busoga. Therefore, people of Bukono, we must seize this opportunity to attract more development to our area,” Namukose said.
Chiefdom Pursuing Recovery of Encroached Land
The Katikiro of Bukono Chiefdom, Owek. Walyomo Isabirye Siliveriyo, revealed that the chiefdom was pursuing the recovery of land allegedly encroached upon by individuals.
He explained that much of the land had originally been reserved for the establishment of schools and health facilities.
“We are currently proposing that our Ministers attend local government council sessions as observers and ensure that this matter is followed up by reminding the relevant leaders,” Isabirye said.
Leaders Call for Peaceful Elections
The Namutumba District LC5 Chairperson, Mukisa David Kalulu Mulondo, urged residents to observe Electoral Commission guidelines and maintain peace during local council elections.
“I urge all residents to follow the Electoral Commission guidelines and maintain peace during the elections,” Mulondo said.
Meanwhile, Kabakubya Eridadi, representing Bukono Clan Heads, appealed to all clan leaders to register their clans without delay while emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural traditions.
“Beyond DNA, there is a traditional way of determining paternity. When a child is born, a woman traditionally presents ‘Akalera’ to the father of the child. However, I urge the young generation to ensure that children are given to the right fathers to avoid future consequences,” Kabakubya said.
The event attracted a large gathering of Bukono subjects, ministers, advisers, clan leaders, and other stakeholders, marking the official opening of the Bukono Lukiiko and reaffirming the chiefdom’s focus on agriculture, education, environmental conservation, and community development.
