President Museveni preaches against politics of division

Masindi:  President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on the people of Masindi District and Ugandans at large to reject politics of division, confusion and sectarianism, warning that such practices undermine national unity and Africa’s socio-economic transformation.

The President’s message was delivered by the State Minister for Bunyoro Affairs, Grace Mary Mugasa, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Masindi Women Empowerment Centre and a thanksgiving ceremony for Masindi Woman Member of Parliament, Dr. Florence Asiimwe at Kabalega Secondary School grounds recently.

In his message, President Museveni said the NRM government identified the wide gender gap when it came to power and has since implemented policies aimed at empowering women and increasing their participation in leadership at all levels.

“The people of Masindi and all Ugandans should reject politics of division, confusion and sectarianism because such practices are enemies of Uganda’s and Africa’s development,” the President said in his message.

The President urged citizens to safeguard the prevailing peace, emphasizing that meaningful development can only be achieved in a peaceful and stable environment.

“There can be no sustainable development without peace and stability. Leaders should avoid promoting confusion and sectarianism,” the message stated.

President Museveni also encouraged Ugandans to actively participate in government wealth creation programmes, including the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga, to improve household incomes and transition into the money economy.

To support the initiative, the President contributed Shs10 million towards the construction of the Masindi Women Empowerment Centre.

The President’s message came amid the absence of three Members of Parliament from Masindi District at the function.

Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, Dr. Florence Asiimwe said she harboured no resentment towards the legislators, noting that every elected leader represents a constituency and deserves respect.

“I have no grudge against my fellow Members of Parliament. Each one of us represents a constituency and deserves respect,” Dr. Asiimwe said.

However, she alleged that the legislators skipped the event because of political differences stemming from her opposition to former Speaker Anita Annet Among, whom they had supported. “I believe they stayed away because I opposed former Speaker Anita Annet Among, whom they supported,” she claimed.

Former Masindi Municipality Member of Parliament Joab Businge commended Dr. Asiimwe for initiating the Women Empowerment Centre, describing it as a project that will benefit women across the district.

“This initiative will empower women and contribute to the development of Masindi. Our leaders should remain united for the good of the district,” Businge said.

Masindi Municipality Mayor Rogers Amanyire and Masindi District LCV Chairperson Patrick Wobusobozi also appealed for unity among political leaders, saying cooperation is essential for improved service delivery and accelerated development.

During the ceremony, Dr. Asiimwe donated 100 chairs and a public address system to each of the parishes of Miduma, Rwempisi and Kimengo, which she said overwhelmingly supported her during the elections.

She pledged to extend similar support to other parishes during future International Women’s Day celebrations in Masindi District.

“I will continue supporting other parishes in the coming annual Women’s Day celebrations so that all communities benefit from these initiatives,” Dr. Asiimwe pledged.
