URSB to carry out mass sensitization on business registration

According to the current statistics from URSB, only 535,000 businesses are registered out of the millions of businesses in the country.

Arua: The Uganda Registration Service Bureau (URSB) has come out to carry out mass sensitization to the people on the importance of business registration.

Research has shown that Uganda has a number of businesses, but only a few have been registered.

Speaking to the media at Dreamland Hotel in Arua district on Tuesday afternoon, Alex Anganya, the deputy registrar general for finance and administration at the at the Uganda Registration Service Bureau, said from the research that a number of businesses are operating on an informal level whereby they are not registered.

According to the current statistics from URSB, only 535,000 businesses are registered out of the millions of businesses in the country.

Anganya says for businesses to access government clearance, they must be registered because it has come to her attention that the business owners fail to register because of taxes imposed.

Hope Okenyi, a board member at URSB, says business registration has a number of benefits for traders as they transact their various businesses.

She says it becomes easier for the traders to access loans in the banks, for the for the expansion of businesses, and also for getting tenders in the various communities.

The resident city commissioner of Arua City, Charles Ichogor, says there is a need for more sensitization campaigns for the business proprietors so that they can register their businesses.

He says the campaign that has started will not stop, and this will help the political leadership to back up and make sure the sensitization reaches everyone in the community.

Fears over double taxation have been a hindrance to the registration of businesses in Uganda.

URSB is mandated under the Uganda Registration Services Bureau Act, Cap. 210, to register all business entities in Uganda that are required by law to be registered.
