Suspended Masindi councillors attend council meeting on court order

He told the meeting that he could not defy a court order since he was not above the law.

Masindi: Masindi municipal council speaker, Opio Tadeo, on March 19, 2024, allowed three suspended councillors to attend council meeting after he was served with a court order.

On November 31, 2023, Opio suspended Robert Akugizibwe, a municipal councillor representing Kijura, Richard Alinaitwe for Civic Ward Upper, and Abdul Azizi Siringi Katuku for Southern Ward, from attending two consecutive full council meetings and committee meetings for allegedly attempting to assault him.

At the council meeting on Tuesday that was held at Masindi municipal council chambers, Opio had objected to the trio’s attendance, but later on, through their lawyer, Richard Akugizibwe of Akugizibwe and Company Advocates, they served the speaker together with the municipal town clerk Francis Nyamugo with a court order issued by the Masindi high court registrar, Juliet Nakitende, directing them to allow the suspended councillors to attend all council and committee meetings, stating that the order shall remain in force for three days as costs shall be incurred.

Speaking to our reporter this evening, counsel Akugizibwe said, much as he served the municipal council together with the speaker with court order, the main suit will still continue.

Abdulazizi Siringi Katuku, the councillor for the southern ward, said they opted for court remedy after failing to harmonize with the speaker.

Richard Alinaitwe, the councillor for Civic Ward Upper, said that after failing to harmonize with the speaker, they went to the court to seek justice.

Speaker Opio told the meeting that he could not defy a court order since he was not above the law.
