The public has been applauded for its vigilance, and the police have reiterated their commitment to combating livestock theft and rural crime.

Kaliro: The territorial police in Kaliro District have arrested two suspects over allegations of cattle theft in an operation that followed a late-night community tip-off.

The suspects have been identified as Bwambale Moses, 21, a boda boda rider and resident of Kamwanyi Zone in Gayaza, Wakiso District, and Muhwezi Living, 22, a driver from Kazinga along Gayaza Road, also in Wakiso District.

The duo was intercepted in Nabigere Village, Bugonza Parish, Namugongo Subcounty, while reportedly transporting suspected stolen cattle in a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX, registration number UBD 599U.

According to ASP Michael Kasadha, the Busoga North Police Spokesperson, the arrests followed a call from vigilant residents who noticed the suspicious vehicle parked in a bushy area at around 2:00 a.m. on May 15, 2025. Suspecting illegal activity, they promptly alerted the District Police Commander, who dispatched a response team.

“Police acted swiftly, but the vehicle had already left the scene,” ASP Kasadha said. “When officers attempted to intercept it, the suspects refused to stop, leading to a high-speed chase.”

During the pursuit, police fired warning shots, and the vehicle eventually overturned. Both suspects were arrested on the spot. Four heads of cattle were found inside the vehicle. One suspect, Muhwezi Living, sustained serious injuries during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Bumanya Health Centre IV.

Kasadha confirmed that investigations are still underway to uncover the full extent of the crime, including possible accomplices and the source of the stolen livestock.

The public has been applauded for its vigilance, and the police have reiterated their commitment to combating livestock theft and rural crime.
