Teenager kills mother in domestic brawl

The body of the deceased was transported to Arua City Mortuary for a postmortem to confirm the cause of death.

Terego; A 16-year-old girl identified only as Scovia has been arrested by police in Terego District for allegedly assaulting her mother, Mariku Grace, 49, leading to her death in a shocking domestic incident.

The incident occurred on the night of July 2, 2025, in Akua Cell, Awaa Ward, Leju Town Council, and is being investigated as a homicide by Terego Central Police Station (CPS).

According to SP Collins Asea, the North and West Nile Regional Police spokesperson, the suspect and her mother both of Lugbara ethnicity and residents of Elavu Cell, Alia Ward had reportedly been drinking local alcohol earlier in the day.

“The pair left the drinking location around 9:00 PM and were en route to their home when an argument broke out,” Asea said.
“The dispute escalated into violence, during which Scovia allegedly attacked her mother with a stick and reportedly inserted it into her nostrils.”

The disturbing scene was discovered by passersby, who found Scovia sitting beside her mother’s lifeless body. Authorities were immediately notified.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), along with Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), arrived to document and process the crime scene. Scovia was arrested on-site and first handed over to the Terego District Probation Officer before being placed in police custody, where she remains as investigations continue.

The body of the deceased was transported to Arua City Mortuary for a postmortem to confirm the cause of death.

This heartbreaking incident has shocked the local community and reignited concerns over domestic violence, a persistent issue in Uganda. Authorities urge families to seek peaceful conflict resolution and make use of available community resources, including counseling and early intervention services.

“This tragedy illustrates the devastating consequences of domestic disputes left unresolved,” said SP Asea, adding that more information will be released as investigations progress.

Statistics paint a troubling picture. According to a 2020 U.N.-backed survey, 95% of Ugandan women and girls reported experiencing physical or sexual violence after age 15. The 2023 Uganda Police Crime Report recorded 15,184 domestic violence cases, the majority involving female victims.

Between 2015 and 2021, Afrobarometer recorded 272,737 cases of domestic violence, including 2,278 homicides believed to have been committed by intimate partners. These numbers underscore the urgent need for targeted, sustained efforts to combat domestic abuse.
