Speaker Among calls for environmental conservation as she mourns Dr. Okurut

She recalled his appeal to members of parliament to actively participate in tree planting and environmental conservation.

Kampala: Speaker Anita Among Annet honored the memory of the late Dr. Tom Okurut, former Executive Director of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

Dr. Okurut, who passed away after brain surgery at Platinum Hospital in Kampala on Sunday, April 14, 2024, was a passionate environmentalist.

In tribute to his legacy, Speaker Among encouraged all Ugandans to plant at least five trees.

During a requiem mass held at St. Luke Church of Uganda in Ntinda on Thursday, April 18, 2024, Speaker Among highlighted Dr. Okurut’s pivotal role in enforcing environmental regulations during his tenure at NEMA.

She recalled his appeal to members of parliament to actively participate in tree planting and environmental conservation.

Speaker Among expressed her heartfelt wish: “Let us all plant five trees in memory of Dr. Tom Okurut. By doing so, we honor his passion and the lasting impact he left behind.”

Dr. Okurut’s expertise in environmental science significantly influenced Uganda’s landscape, and he personally planted over 5,000 trees as a shining example.

To the bereaved family, Speaker Among offered solace, emphasizing that God’s love and comfort are unwavering.

She reminded them that God is the protector of widows and orphans. As they mourn Dr. Okurut, they should also celebrate his steadfast commitment to environmental protection.

Dr. Tom Okurut, who served as NEMA’s executive director for two consecutive five-year terms since 2011, will be laid to rest on Saturday, April 20, 2024, in Akadot, Kumi District.
