Domestic animals, including goats and sheep, perished in the floods, and gardens along the riverbanks were also washed away.

Kibaale: The sudden bursting of River Mbaya’s banks has led to tragic consequences, with schoolchildren and other residents caught in the floods.

River Mbaya, which separates Kyebando and Kasimbi sub-counties along Kibaale-Kyebando-Pachwa Road, experienced a sharp burst of its banks.

Pupils from Kisalizi Parents Primary School were heading home for lunch when the floods struck on Monday.

The exact number of missing people remains uncertain, but residents witnessed children being swept away by the running waters.

A boda boda rider managed to escape, but unfortunately, his motorcycle was taken by the floodwaters.

Omuhereza Kahoojo, one of the survivors, described the harrowing experience of floating on the rushing water.

He and the boda boda rider were fortunate to escape, but the loss of the motorcycle is a stark reminder of the disaster’s impact.

Domestic animals, including goats and sheep, perished in the floods, and gardens along the riverbanks were also washed away.

Vincent Senkubuge, the parish councilor for Rusenke parish, attributes the flooding to silting.

He has pledged to raise awareness and sensitize communities about the importance of not encroaching on rivers and wetlands.

Godfrey Muhonge Kasanga, the Kibaale district chairperson who rushed to the scene advised the public to alternatively use the Mugarama-Kasimbi road or the Kibaale-Kisalizi Igayaza to Kasimbi route.
