Nebbi: The Church of Uganda’s Nebbi Diocese is mourning the loss of senior clergyman Rev. Sam Akenda, who passed away at Mulago National Referral Hospital on Monday, June 22, 2026.
Rev. Akenda, 74, was serving as the Parish Priest of Kivuje Parish in Jonam Archdeaconry at the time of his death.
His daughter, Sunday Kayom, confirmed the sad news in a brief message expressing her grief.
“This is so painful. Why God? Rest peacefully, Dad,” Kayom said.
The news of Rev. Akenda’s passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences from Christians, clergy, and members of the public, particularly on social media, where many have described him as a devoted servant of God and encouraged his family to remain strong during this difficult period.
Just last week, Rev. Marlon Rupiny of Paidha Town Parish had called upon Christians attending prayers at St. Paul Church of Uganda Mvungu in Paidha to pray for Rev. Akenda, who had been unwell.
“Let us continue praying for Rev. Sam Akenda, who is not feeling well,” Rev. Rupiny reportedly urged the congregation.
Family members said burial arrangements are still being finalized and that the date for the funeral service and burial will be communicated later.
Throughout his ministry, Rev. Akenda served in several parishes across Nebbi Diocese, earning respect for his dedication to pastoral work and community service.
His pastoral assignments included Abanga Parish, Parombu Town Parish, Mvuranyi Parish, Nyarwodho Parish, and Angol Parish under Ukuru Archdeaconry.
Until his passing, he was serving at Kivuje Parish in Jonam Archdeaconry, where he continued to minister to Christians despite advancing age and health challenges.
Church leaders and faithful across the diocese have described his death as a significant loss to the Anglican Church and the wider community.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
