Masindi: Residents of Kiruuli 1 village in Pakanyi subcounty, Masindi district, were last night gripped with shock after catching their colleague red-handedly raping the mother.

The culprit has been identified as Charles Owinji, 30, who reportedly raped his 70-year-old mother, whose name has been withheld.

David Nyakuni, the village vice chairperson, told this publication Wednesday morning that the incident happened last night at around 9 p.m at the victim’s home.

Nyakuni explains that Owinji went to his mother’s home, where she stays alone, and dragged her to her house, where he raped her.

‘’He went to his mother’s home, where she stays alone, dragged her to her house, and raped her; this prompted the victim to make an alarm that alerted other residents, who later arrested and took him to his home,’’ he explained.

Nyakuni adds that the residents started beating up Owinji, which prompted him to hand him over to his relatives so that they could handle matters as a clan.

The vice area chairperson stressed that Owinji, who on several occasions had attempted to rape her sisters, separated from his wife recently, and he has been staying alone.

Nyakuni says Owinji takes opium and other drugs that he believes could have driven him to commit the act.

Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, said that the case hasn’t been reported to the police.

He therefore asked the victims or area chairpersons to always report criminal cases, asserting that they were supposed to be handled by police, not area chairpersons.
