Arua: Koboko district emerged winners of athletic competitions that were organized by Westnile Rural Electricity Company (Wenreco), the power distributor within the West Nile subregion, to unearth and nurture young sporting talents in different districts of their jurisdiction.

The competitions that took place at Mvara Senior Secondary School over the weekend attracted participants from eleven districts: Pakwach, Obongi, Arua, Adjumani, Moyo, Zombo, Madi Okollo, Yumbe, Maracha, Nebbi, Koboko, and Arua City, the only city within the region.

The participants were identified with the help of the various district sports officers of the various districts from primary and secondary schools within the region.

The participants participated in various track and field events, including the 100-meter run, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, and two relay races, among others.

Earlier on, during the press briefing, the public relations officer Wangoic Judith said that the main purpose of this activity was to identify talents among the young lads within Westnile so that they could be helped to achieve their dreams in order to compete nationally and internationally.

She said many of the young talents have died because, after participating, they failed to proceed further because they lacked support, and Wenreco had come out to support them as a way of giving back to the community.

Kenneth Kigumba, the Wenreco general manager, pledged his total commitment to promoting talent in Westnile.

He said they have come up with the idea, and it will stand as long as Wenreco is still operational in Westnile.

He said this has been carefully chosen so that the talents can benefit the talent owners beyond dying in their various trading centers.

Kalsum Abdul Fadhmula, the secretary of social works in Arua City, thanked Wenreco for the initiative they have started.

She called upon the community to rally behind and support Wenreco so that they could continuously support the cause.

Meanwhile, Shida Leni, who was the chief runner, urged the participants to embrace education.

She said talent without education may sometimes be hard to identify, as most of the time it is done in schools by different stakeholders.

Shida also thanked Wenreco for such an initiative to promote talent in Westnile.

She said a number of Ugandans are now self-employed based on the talents they have.
