Karongo Health Centre boosted with maternity ward, ambulance

He applauded the staff of Karongo Health Centre III for their dedication and commitment to serving the community despite existing challenges.

Hoima: Karongo Health Centre III in Hoima West City Division has received a new maternity ward and an ambulance in a move aimed at improving maternal healthcare services in the area.

The new maternity block and ambulance were commissioned by the Hoima Resident City Commissioner, Badru Mugabi.

Mugabi revealed that the government invested 590 million shillings in the construction of the maternity ward, noting that the facility is expected to enhance service delivery and improve maternal health outcomes.

He also commissioned a new ambulance for Hoima West Division and warned health centre managers against commercializing the vehicle, stressing that it should remain accessible to the public for emergency medical services.

Mugabi added that the government is deliberately investing in lower-level health facilities to decongest Hoima Regional Referral Hospital and bring healthcare services closer to communities.

According to him, the new maternity ward will reduce unnecessary referrals and ease pressure on the regional referral hospital.

Gerald Kyomuhendo, the In-charge of Karongo Health Centre III, welcomed the development, describing the new maternity ward as a major relief to both health workers and expectant mothers.

Kyomuhendo pledged proper maintenance of the facility and improved care for mothers, noting that the old maternity ward lacked adequate facilities, forcing women to endure difficult conditions during childbirth.

Representing the UPDF Engineers Brigade, the Western Region Project Manager, Capt. Yunusu Ntegeka, said construction works commenced in 2024, with progress depending on funds released by the Ministry of Health.

He called upon stakeholders to actively monitor government projects to ensure quality implementation, adding that the engineers delivered the project to the required standards.

Ntegeka also commended Hoima City authorities and residents for their cooperation during the construction period. He noted that the remaining works at the facility include construction of a twin staff house, a placenta pit, and a VIP latrine.

Meanwhile, Hoima City Mayor Edward Isingoma urged health facility managers to plan ahead for medical supplies and engage the National Medical Stores to ensure adequate drug stocks.

He applauded the staff of Karongo Health Centre III for their dedication and commitment to serving the community despite existing challenges.
