Hoima City approves 46.3 kilometres of roads for rehabilitation
The rehabilitation works will be funded by the central government, with each kilometre expected to cost approximately Shs20 million.
Hoima: Hoima City Roads Committee has approved the rehabilitation of 46.3 kilometres of roads under the Shs1 billion Road Maintenance Grant for the 2026/2027 financial year, as leaders pledged to improve the city’s road network ahead of increased economic activity and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The decision was reached during a Roads Committee meeting held on Friday at the Hoima City Headquarters boardroom.
During the meeting, members unanimously re-elected Hoima East Division Member of Parliament Dr. Patrick Mweigwa Isingoma Obama as Chairperson of the Roads Committee for another five-year term.
The motion for his re-election was moved by Hoima West Division MP Ismail Kasule and seconded by Hoima City Woman MP Asinansi Nyakato.
The committee approved rehabilitation works on roads including Bulemwa–Bubaale–Bujura (5.8km), Butebere–Kitinti–Mbogwe, Nyakititi–Bulemwa, Kisonde–Kyamutema–Butale, Moparo–Kyedikyo, Bujumbura–Kihomboza, Mpaija–Kasasa, Kikwatamigo–Kidoti–Kiboni, Kyesiiga–Kakundi, Biliku Road, Kyabahesi–Wabiguga–Buswekera, Kanenankumba–Butanjwa (2km), Mwendante–Bubaale, Parajwoki–Nyabata and Kalyabuhire Road.
The rehabilitation works will be funded by the central government, with each kilometre expected to cost approximately Shs20 million.
The committee also received an update on the implementation of AFCON road projects, which are expected to improve traffic flow before Uganda co-hosts the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
City Engineer Kiiza Boniventure said the survey and engineering designs had already been completed by MBW Consulting, but construction has delayed because some affected landowners have declined to surrender portions of their land without compensation.
“The surveys and road designs are complete, but implementation has delayed because some affected landlords have refused to consent to the use of part of their land since the ministry has not provided funds for compensation,” Kiiza explained.
Speaking during the meeting, Hoima West MP Ismail Kasule and Hoima City Woman MP Asinansi Nyakato pledged to support the Roads Committee in ensuring the planned works are implemented successfully.
“We shall continue supporting the Roads Committee through our oversight role to ensure these projects are implemented for the benefit of the people of Hoima City,” the two legislators pledged.
In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Patrick Mweigwa Isingoma Obama thanked committee members for renewing their confidence in his leadership and called for unity in implementing the city’s road development agenda.
“I appeal to all committee members and stakeholders to work together so that we can achieve our goals of improving the road network and transforming Hoima City,” Obama said.
The Roads Committee says the planned rehabilitation works will improve accessibility, ease transportation and complement ongoing infrastructure development as Hoima prepares for the opportunities expected from the 2027 AFCON tournament.
