Driver killed in fuel tanker–baby coach collision in Pakwach

The crash triggered an outpouring of concern on social media, where residents shared images and videos of the aftermath.

Pakwach: A fatal road accident on the night of May 20, 2025, has left one person dead and several others injured following a head-on collision between a fuel tanker and a Baby Coach bus along the Pakwach-Nebbi highway.

The crash occurred at around 9:35 PM in Payila Alwi, Pakwach District, and claimed the life of 48-year-old Issack Adan Omar, the driver of the fuel tanker (Registration No. KBW 679H/ZG 0855, Mercedes-Benz).

The Baby Coach bus (Registration No. UBB 145S, Isuzu), which was traveling toward Paidha in Zombo District, was driven by a man identified only as Mustafa, who sustained critical injuries.

He was rushed to Pakwach Health Centre IV for emergency medical care, along with several injured passengers.

SP Collins Asea, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the details, stating:“The Isuzu bus, driven by Mustafa, was en route to Paidha when it collided with a white Mercedes-Benz Astros fuel tanker driven by Issack Adan Omar, heading toward Pakwach.”

Local authorities, including the Pakwach District Police Commander, inspected the crash site. However, the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. The deceased’s body was transported to Pakwach Health Centre IV’s morgue for a postmortem examination.

Both wrecked vehicles remain at the scene as police continue to gather evidence.

Police have urged motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads and strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies.

The incident adds to a growing number of road accidents in Uganda. According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2024, the country recorded 4,523 road fatalities, marking a 2.3% increase from 2023.

There were 23,172 serious crashes, most attributed to reckless driving, speeding, and non-compliance with traffic laws.

Northern Uganda, including Pakwach District, remains particularly vulnerable due to poor road conditions and the high volume of heavy vehicle traffic.
