Cholera cases in Kitgum rise to four within three days

The dam is currently the leading suspect as the source of the infection.

Kitgum: A cholera outbreak has been confirmed in Kitgum District, with four cases recorded in just three days since the first infection was reported on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025.

According to Mr. Ojok Thomas, Senior Hospital Administrator at Kitgum General Hospital, the initial case involved a 10-year-old boy from Lobene East Village, Akwang Sub-county.

Since then, three additional suspected cases who tested reactive on the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) have been admitted to the hospital’s isolation unit.

The newly affected individuals include the boy’s father, now in critical condition, and his two daughters, who previously tested positive and showed classical cholera symptoms.

The man’s first wife, who was listed among 37 close contacts under monitoring, has now also developed symptoms and is being transferred to the hospital.

Health officials are expressing serious concern over the unsanitary conditions in Lobene East Village, particularly the use of a local dam that is shared by both residents and animals.

The dam is currently the leading suspect as the source of the infection.

To confirm the outbreak, three samples have been dispatched to the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) for laboratory testing.

Authorities are urging residents to avoid consuming untreated water, observe proper hygiene practices, and report any cases of severe diarrhea or vomiting to nearby health centers immediately.
