Agriculture ministry lifts livestock quarantine in Buliisa
According to a letter sent to the district by the ministry, the quarantine restrictions imposed on them have now been lifted, adding that now cattle markets are to resume.

Buliisa: The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF) has lifted the ban on the sale, consumption, and movement of livestock in Buliisa Sub-County Buliisa District District.
The quarantine was imposed on May 30th this year in Buliisa Sub County, prohibiting the movement of cattle, goats, pigs, sheep and their products to and from Buliisa following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease.
Speaking to this publication on Friday evening, Rashid Mubiru, the acting district veterinarian, said the restrictions that have been in force since late May, coupled with strict adherence to animal movement and on-farm biosecurity, and measures by farmers and livestock traders followed by strategic vaccination in the affected area, have brought the disease under control.

Mubiru notes that the laboratory investigations undertaken by the ministry confirmed on Wednesday this week that there is now an absence of foot and mouth disease in the sub-county.
He adds that the letter sent to the district by the ministry indicates that the quarantine restrictions imposed on them have now been lifted, adding that now cattle markets are to resume.

Robert Lukumu, a cattle keeper, narrates that the lift on the ban has come at the right time when it’s almost approaching the festive season, noting that it’s a period when they get enough clients from different parts of the country.
