Over 50 NUP members defect to NRM
The defectors pledged loyalty to the NRM and committed to supporting Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Kampala: In a significant political shift, over 50 members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) have officially defected to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party through the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
The new NRM recruits were unveiled at PLU offices and welcomed by PLU Director for Mobilization, Michael Mawanda.
This new group of members had previously been supporters of NUP but were pardoned by President Yoweri Museveni after being imprisoned for charges related to the illegal possession of ammunition.
The defecting NUP members hail from various areas, including Kyebando, Mpererwe, Komamboga, Kiwatule, Najera, Nakawa, Buwambo, Bulenga, and Mpigi-Buwama.
During the event, Mawanda urged the new recruits not to remain in opposition parties, which, according to him, have no chance of capturing power in the next century.
He emphasized the importance of supporting the NRM, particularly in the context of mobilizing for the PLU chairman, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as part of the preparations for a future political transition after President Museveni’s tenure.
Mawanda also stressed the need for discipline and respect among the new members as they join the NRM movement.
