Arua leaders eulogize fallen DHO Drileba
The mob reportedly attacked him over a land dispute, leading to his death.
Arua: Leaders in Arua District have expressed profound sorrow over the tragic death of Dr. Paul Bishop Drileba, the acting District Health Officer, during a council sitting held at Ndrivu village, Kuluva Parish.
Drileba, remembered as a dedicated and hardworking individual, played a pivotal role in improving health services in the district.
Toko Swaibu, the Resident District Commissioner for Arua, described the tragedy as a wake-up call for leaders to address conflicts in the community. He highlighted the need for an urgent meeting between landlords and tenants to prevent future disputes.
John Bosco Odama, LC3 Chairperson for Logiri Sub County, praised Drileba for his responsiveness, citing his efforts to provide additional staff to understaffed health facilities in Logiri.
Engineer Tiyo Oda, the district engineer, recalled knowing Drileba for over 30 years, describing him as tolerant and always willing to assist. He noted that Drileba’s untimely death comes at a critical time when many civil servants in the district have retired, posing a potential challenge to service delivery.
Aziyo Flavia, a workers’ representative, emphasized the need for community sensitization about the dangers of mob justice to prevent similar incidents.
Dr. Drileba was killed by a mob on Saturday in Oyeku village, Ajia Sub County. He had gone to the area with his lawyer and surveyor to survey an 80-acre piece of land he had purchased. The mob reportedly attacked him over a land dispute, leading to his death.
The leaders collectively condemned the act of mob justice and called for increased awareness and peaceful conflict resolution measures. They stressed the importance of addressing land-related disputes promptly and fairly to avoid further tragedies.
Drileba’s passing has left a significant void in the district’s health sector. His contributions, especially in addressing staffing gaps and improving health services, were widely recognized.
This tragic incident has not only highlighted the challenges of land disputes in the region but also underscored the urgent need for community education on justice and legal processes.
Meanwhile, two suspects have been arrested over the murder of Dr. Drileba. The suspects whose particulars have been concealed not to jeopardize investigations are detained at Arua CPS.
They were arrested in Rhinocamp after a successful manhunt by Ajia Sub county youth.
