Hoima: The local council chairpersons of Hoima City have welcomed the government’s move to extend their term of office for another 180 days.

On Wednesday, local government minister Rapheal Magyezi revealed the government had extended the term of office of local council chairpersons one and two, citing a lack of funds and logistics, among others.

Speaking to ugreports.co.ug Thursday evening, the chairpersons revealed they will wait for the government until it is ready to conduct the local council elections and will not resign but continue serving their electorates as mandated.

‘’We shall wait for the government until it is ready to conduct the local council elections and will not resign but continue serving our electorates as mandated,’’ they said.

Jim Kamugisha, chairperson LC1 for Kichwamba I Cell in Hoima East division, revealed they will abide by the government’s decision and will continue serving their people.

He further added that they are not contesting the elections and will wait until the government is ready to conduct them as they continue doing their job.

Byonta, the LCI chairperson, urges those who intend to contest the position to remain patient until the government is ready to conduct the elections. He says they will continue serving their people as usual since they remain in the office legally according to government pronouncements.

Byonta also asks the government, as they prepare for the elections, to think of increasing their monthly salary since the 10,000 shillings they get is not enough to cater for their needs.

Brian Kaboyo, the Mayor of Hoima City, says the chairpersons in the city should continue doing their work to avoid any leadership vacuum at the cell level, adding that potential contestants and electorates should remain calm as the government looks for funds.
