Namisindwa lifts FMD quarantine after reduction in cases
Animals without valid vaccination documentation will not be allowed to move or enter livestock markets.
Namisinda: Namisindwa District Local Government has lifted the quarantine imposed on the district following a significant reduction in reported cases of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
The quarantine, which was imposed on July 15, 2026, was lifted effective September 8, 2026, according to a notice issued by the Chief Administrative Officer, Joseph Lomongin.
The decision followed an assessment by the District Veterinary Office, which reported an improvement in the FMD situation across the district.
However, the lifting of the quarantine does not exempt livestock owners, farmers and traders from complying with measures aimed at preventing and controlling the spread of the disease.
The district authorities have directed livestock owners to ensure that animals being moved to other sub-counties or districts, or taken to livestock markets, have valid FMD vaccination cards as proof of vaccination.
Animals without valid vaccination documentation will not be allowed to move or enter livestock markets.
Namisindwa District LC5 Chairperson Emma Bwayo said the district lost more than 87 cows to FMD before the quarantine was imposed.
“We lost more than 87 cows before the quarantine was imposed because of Foot and Mouth Disease. Farmers should take vaccination seriously and ensure that all their livestock are vaccinated,” Bwayo said.
Bwayo urged livestock owners to embrace vaccination as a key measure to prevent further deaths and control the spread of the disease.
He also called on residents to remain vigilant when making payments, urging them to use the designated electronic cash system.
“Residents should not give money to individuals claiming to be collecting payments on behalf of the authorities. All payments should be made through the designated e-cash system,” Bwayo said.
District authorities have encouraged livestock owners and traders to continue observing veterinary guidelines despite the lifting of the quarantine to prevent a resurgence of FMD in Namisindwa.
