Retired medical practitioner arrested over alleged illegal abortions

Mityana: Police in Mityana District have arrested a 70-year-old retired medical practitioner following an intelligence-led operation at his home over allegations of conducting illegal abortions.
The suspect, identified as Madaaba Samuel, a retired orthopaedic practitioner, was arrested alongside his wife at their residence in Gombolola Cell, Busimbi Division, Mityana Municipality.
According to the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, SSP Kigozi Lameck, the operation was conducted on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after police received information that the retired practitioner was allegedly carrying out illegal abortion procedures from his home.
Scene-of-crime officers reportedly recovered several exhibits during the operation, including five human fetuses, a blood-stained mattress, medical instruments and other items believed to be relevant to the ongoing investigations.
SSP Kigozi said police were working to establish further details surrounding the case.
“We recovered five fetuses in a bucket, aged between three and six months, some of which could easily be identified by gender, and we are tracing for their owners,” SSP Kigozi said.
Madaaba and his wife are currently in police custody as the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) processes the case file.
According to SSP Kigozi, the file will be forwarded to the State Attorney for legal guidance and possible sanctioning of charges arising from the allegations.
The possible charges under consideration include procuring an abortion, infanticide, conspiracy, and aiding or abetting abortion-related offences.
Police have since cautioned private medical practitioners against carrying out medical procedures outside approved professional and legal standards.
Authorities have also encouraged adults who are not ready to have children to seek approved family-planning services and methods.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
