Kigumba Secondary School BOG credited for transforming school

Kiryandongo: Kigumba Secondary School has demonstrated how a functional Board of Governors (BOG) can contribute to the transformation of a school through strategic planning, resource mobilization, infrastructure development and stakeholder engagement.
Speaking during the handover ceremony between the outgoing and incoming Board of Governors, Head Teacher Moses Mayanja credited the outgoing board with contributing to improved academic performance, increased enrolment and greater confidence among parents.
Mayanja said the board played a key role in mobilizing resources for the construction of eight classrooms under the Uganda Secondary Education Expansion Project (USEEP), as well as the construction and improvement of the girls’ dormitory.
He added that the board provided strategic guidance on discipline and staff welfare, helping to create a better environment for both teachers and learners.
Outgoing BOG Chairperson Julius Balikagira said the board developed a school development plan to guide projects and ensure resources were directed towards priority needs. During its tenure, the school operated a budget of about Shs1.9 billion, requiring proper planning and oversight.
Balikagira said enrolment at the school also grew significantly, with Ordinary Level students increasing from 923 to 1,178, while Advanced Level enrolment rose from just one student to 135.
He said the growth created additional demand for classrooms, teachers, accommodation and other facilities. The board lobbied Kiryandongo District Local Government for a deep borehole and supported the procurement of a standby generator, public address system and 28 computers.
The board also launched a fundraising campaign for a school bus, with each student expected to contribute Shs10,000 per term.
However, Balikagira identified the limited number of teachers on the government payroll as a major challenge affecting academic performance and urged the incoming board to maintain strong partnerships with parents, teachers, students and the district local government.
New BOG Chairperson Cathebert Asaba commended the outgoing board for its contribution to infrastructure development, saying its achievements should provide a foundation for further progress.
The District Education Officer, Reverend Edward Kiirya, challenged the new board to uphold the legacy of its predecessor and work closely with school management and other stakeholders.
The transition comes at a time when Kigumba Secondary School is seeking to translate its growing enrolment and improved infrastructure into stronger academic outcomes.
The new board is expected to sustain stakeholder partnerships, address teacher shortages and continue investing in infrastructure and learner welfare.
The experience of Kigumba Secondary School highlights the importance of an active and accountable Board of Governors in providing strategic oversight, promoting accountability, mobilizing resources and supporting the long-term development of a school.
