Five sentenced to prison over PDM cash

The accused included SACCO leaders the chairman, secretary, and treasurer.

Kiryandongo: The Kiryandongo District Magistrate Court has sentenced five individuals to one year in prison each after being found guilty on six counts of obtaining money by false pretense.

The five were accused of extorting UGX 110,000 from each of six SACCO members, amounting to a total of UGX 660,000.

According to court proceedings, Abalo Margret and Amsolo Unice were sent to Kiryandongo Government Prison, commonly known as Dyang Prison. The three male convicts Aluk Joel, Bigumirwa Patrick, and Mukwana Jacob were remanded to Kididma Prison, also known as Kigumba Government Prison.

The sentencing was confirmed by His Worship Abiti Samson Loum, the Kiryandongo District Chief Magistrate.

The arrests followed a community Baraza (dialogue meeting) organized by the District PDM Focal Person, Mr. Byenkya Isa Hassan, who received reports of extortion from members of Mpumwe PDM SACCO in Kigumba Sub-county. The accused included SACCO leaders the chairman, secretary, and treasurer.

Their arrest was ordered by the Deputy RDC of Kiryandongo District, Mr. Akweteireho Jonathan, after multiple beneficiaries reported the extortion.

In a separate case, Apolot Mary was sentenced to two years in prison for 20 counts of obtaining money by false pretense. She conned 20 individuals by falsely claiming to represent an NGO named Give Direct, collecting UGX 17,000 from each, totaling UGX 340,000.

She was also remanded to Kiryandongo Prison.
