Inmates escape from Mityana prison

Preliminary investigations reveal that the inmates were being escorted to their wards after meals when four individuals jumped over the fence.

Mityana: Police in Mityana district have put up a serious manhunt for three male inmates who escaped from Mityana government prison on December 6, 2023, around 1600 hrs.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the inmates were being escorted to their wards after meals when four individuals jumped over the fence.

The police spokesperson for the Wamala region, Rachael Kawala, said in a statement Wednesday evening that one of the escapees was successfully re-arrested and the remaining three managed to escape.

She has identified the escapees as Francis Mfitumukiza, 24, from Rubange village, Murora Sub County, Kisoro District, facing charges of murder and aggravated robbery.

Others are Gideon Nasasira, 37, from Muko village, Muko sub county, Rubanda district, is charged with aggravated robbery, and Hakiza Joseph, 27, from Nyarubuye village, Katobo Parish, Nyarubuye sub county, Kisoro district, is facing charges of aggravated defilement.

Kawala said the case of escape from lawful custody has been registered under Mityana CRB 1197, with ongoing search efforts.

The regional police mouthpiece urged anyone with information about the escapees to report to the nearest police station.
