Couple electrocuted in Katwe

Ssefuma was pronounced dead upon arrival at Lifeline Clinic, while Namayube was confirmed dead at Kiruddu Hospital.

Kampala: Tragedy struck the Katwe Nkere Zone in Makindye Division when a couple lost their lives in a suspected electrocution incident caused by an illegal electricity connection.

The deceased have been identified as Ssefuma Charles and Namayube Tina. According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred when Namayube Tina was hanging laundry and accidentally touched a live electric wire illegally strung between two rooftops. She was electrocuted instantly.

Her husband, Ssefuma Charles, in an attempt to rescue her, was also electrocuted. Neighbors rushed both victims to nearby health centers. Ssefuma was pronounced dead upon arrival at Lifeline Clinic, while Namayube was confirmed dead at Kiruddu Hospital.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the incident, stating that initial investigations point to an illegal power connection as the cause.

“This incident highlights the deadly consequences of illegal power connections,” Onyango warned. “We urge residents to always engage qualified electricians and avoid tampering with electrical systems.”

Police have launched an investigation into the source of the illegal connection and are running a public awareness campaign in the area to promote electrical safety.

Anyone with information is urged to assist authorities.
