Masindi: The local chairpersons in Masindi district are asking the government to consider giving them motorcycles instead of bicycles, citing that they face difficulties in terms of mobility.
The call was made recently during the belated celebrations of Independence Day for Masindi district held at Kikingura Primary School playground in Kikingura village, Bwijanga Sub County.
Speaking on behalf of other LC1 Chairpersons, Deo Rubanjwa, the LC1 Chairperson of Kikingura Village, said according to the services they render to the community, the government should consider improvising them with motorcycles instead of bicycles.
‘’We render a lot of services to the community and this country, and in this era we are not entitled to get bicycles but motorcycles; we can afford to fuel them other than giving us bicycles,’’ he requested, noting that ‘’Our children are even tired of cycling; we need motorcycles.”
On the same note, Rubanjwa asked the government to increase their allowance, saying that 10,000 shillings per month is too little for them due to the skyrocketing prices of goods and the expenses they incur like photocopying their documents, movements, and others.
Last year, in December, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Kahinda Otafiire, handed over 339 bicycles to the LCI and LCII chairpersons of Masindi Municipality and Masindi District to help in the mobilization of citizens and monitoring of government programs.
Masindi district got 256 bicycles, while Masindi municipality got 83. The leaders received their bicycles during the World AIDS Day celebrations held at Masindi Booma grounds in Masindi town.
Otafiire asked the leaders to receive them in good faith, saying that the government has more plans for them.
