Buliisa grapples with poor garbage disposal amid oil boom

“Communities have been sensitized on the importance of proper garbage disposal, but we need additional resources to tackle the issue effectively,” Muliisa said.

Buliisa: Leaders in the rapidly developing, oil-rich Buliisa District are urging the central government for immediate support with garbage trucks, as they struggle to manage the increasing waste from oil and gas activities.

Epafura Muliisa, the LC3 Chairperson for Buliisa Town Council, revealed in an interview that the district is facing a serious garbage disposal crisis.

The influx of hotels, bars, and businesses linked to oil and gas has significantly increased waste production, yet the district lacks the proper equipment to manage it.

“We have secured a garbage collection center, but we don’t have trucks to transport the waste,” Muliisa said. “As a result, heaps of decomposing garbage remain visible in markets and dumping sites, sometimes for weeks, due to the absence of garbage trucks.”

The local government has taken steps to address the issue, including the procurement of tricycles in this year’s budget to assist with waste collection.

However, the LC3 Chairperson emphasized that this is not a permanent solution and has urged the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development to provide proper garbage trucks for the district.

“Communities have been sensitized on the importance of proper garbage disposal, but we need additional resources to tackle the issue effectively,” Muliisa said.

Vincent Mukonyezi, Vice Chairperson of Buliisa District and leader of government business, called on fellow leaders to unify their voices and push for immediate intervention.

He also urged residents to uphold good sanitation practices for their health while the district continues its efforts to secure the necessary waste management resources.
