Virika Cathedral: A beacon of faith and tourism revival

As the principal church of the diocese, Our Lady of Snows Virika also serves as the residence of the Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese.

Fort Portal: The city of Fort Portal is abuzz with excitement as the Catholic Church prepares to celebrate the re-dedication of the magnificent Our Lady of Snows Virika Cathedral on March 2, 2025.

This iconic landmark, a testament to Tooro’s rich spiritual heritage, has undergone an extensive renovation, transforming it into a must-visit destination for both tourists and pilgrims.

Perched on the scenic Virika Hill, the cathedral offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, providing a glimpse into the region’s natural beauty. Its stunning architecture, which blends traditional and modern elements, is a masterpiece that reflects the local culture and history.

According to Alex Ruhunda, the Fort Portal Central Division Member of Parliament, the renovation has not only restored the cathedral’s former glory but has also significantly enhanced its appeal as a tourist attraction.

“Visitors can explore the intricate stone carvings, vibrant stained-glass windows, and the beautifully landscaped gardens,” says Ruhunda.

Ruhunda further explains that local businesses are preparing to offer a range of services, from accommodation and dining to guided tours and souvenir shopping, as they welcome visitors from near and far.

Sylivia Rwabwogo, a devoted Catholic and former Woman Member of Parliament in the city, shared her enthusiasm about the cathedral’s potential to become a premier tourist destination in the Tooro Kingdom and the region at large, offering a unique blend of spirituality, culture, and natural beauty.

Msgr. Isiah Mayombo, the Vicar General of Fort Portal Diocese, explains that the cathedral, built in 1968, showcases a unique combination of traditional African and European architectural styles.

“The cathedral’s striking facade, adorned with intricate stone carvings and vibrant stained-glass windows, is a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage,” says Fr. Mayombo.

“As you step inside, you will be awestruck by the cathedral’s soaring ceilings, beautifully crafted wooden pews, and the stunning altar,” he adds.

About the cathedral

The Our Lady of Snows Virika Cathedral was built in 1967 and dedicated on April 21, 1978, by His Eminence Laurian Cardinal Rugambwa, the then Archbishop of Bukoba, Tanzania.

The diocese consists of 999,394 Catholic believers and 29 parishes, which are divided into three deaneries: Virika, Kamwenge, and Katoosa.

As the principal church of the diocese, Our Lady of Snows Virika also serves as the residence of the Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese.
